SCIMITAR-HORNED ORYX HUNTS
Scimitar-Horned Oryx hunts in South Texas offer a rare opportunity to pursue one of the world’s most iconic and resilient desert antelope species—right here on the rugged terrain of Dead Man’s Pass Ranch. These majestic animals, native to the Sahara and Sahel regions of Northern Africa, once roamed in the hundreds of thousands. Sadly, due to habitat loss and overhunting, they were declared extinct in the wild in the early 2000s. Thanks to dedicated breeding programs on Texas ranches like ours, the Scimitar Oryx is making a remarkable comeback.
Standing up to 4.5 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing between 200–300 pounds, Scimitar Oryx are powerful, graceful animals with a striking white coat, reddish-brown neck, and long, slender horns that sweep back in a beautiful arc—often stretching over 40 inches in length. Both males and females carry horns, and their dramatic silhouette makes them a favorite among exotic game hunters and collectors.
Built for harsh desert environments, the Scimitar Oryx has adapted incredible survival traits. In the wild, they feed mostly at night to take advantage of the higher moisture content in roots, buds, herbs, and grasses. Even in the most arid climates, they can go long periods without free-standing water, relying on the vegetation they consume to stay hydrated.
On our South Texas hunting ranch, these animals thrive in open plains, mesquite-dotted pastures, and rugged brush, mirroring their native habitat. Their alertness, speed, and sharp eyesight make them challenging to pursue, especially in the wide-open spaces they favor. Spot-and-stalk is the preferred method for hunting them, offering a truly exciting and rewarding chase.
In addition to their dramatic appearance, Scimitar Oryx are also valued for their lean, flavorful meat, which is high in protein and low in fat. Whether you’re drawn to their rarity, their impressive horns, or their excellent table fare, a Scimitar Oryx hunt at Dead Man’s Pass Ranch delivers a memorable and meaningful hunting experience.
Come walk the same type of terrain these desert legends once roamed—and take home a trophy that’s as impressive as it is historically significant.
